Your Struggles are the Path to Mastery

Transform setbacks into strength and clarity ✨

A Message for The Weary

You entered this race to take on something difficult, impossible even; you are the inventor of your destiny.

Creating in the arena of wolves is daunting. Most of us, as creators, academics, innovators, or even solopreneurs and startup founders, do not know the way through the forest when we enter it.

Some are fortunate to have wise allies who have fought these battles before; most of us are not so fortunate.

There comes a crossroads, or crisis, in the Greek tradition, at which we must decide to break away from our past to move forward unencumbered with the old ways of being and thinking. Our childhood may have been marked with the disappointment of rejection, bullying, and abandonment in small or significant ways. These wounds from long ago are reactivated when we search for encouragement and support from people who have no interest in us as human beings, not to mention as innovators. We seek advice, guidance, and allyship from people unable to give these things because we recognize how they treat us as familiar; given new awareness, we can choose differently.

To provide an example, if you are a died-in-the-wool people pleaser raised to keep a smile on your face and make those around you feel pleasant and unchallenged, it should not come as a surprise that when you seek advice or allyship, you find yourself faced with incredulity and even condescension. Many people believe that those who do not speak in a way they understand are just plain wrong. Going to the well to drink this poisonous water is a mistake, and let me warn against it with the full measure of my ability.

Unfortunately, the baggage of our past is not easily released. We must land in the clarity of a moment of reckoning; at this point, we decide to part ways with an old reality to make way for a new one. Let me assure you that the prospects of a reality of your own making will be just the relief you have been waiting for.

Speak to Those Who See Differently

Clarity comes when the time-wasting stops.

How many conversations will you have with deaf ears who may hear the same idea from another source with glee but reject you outright?

Many.

Try to hold the reality of the mismatch between you and rejection as two separate truths. You are not being rejected; you are being told to quit by someone you hoped would encourage you. This is their fear and lack of knowledge not your worth being stated.

You are either not clear about what you are doing yet, this is extremely normal for the first year or longer of any venture, or you are simply speaking to the wrong person.

Take the hit, cry if you need to release the pain and disappointment, and find your tribe. If you are still early, refine, and remember that each rock your sword strikes hones your metal to a knife's edge. This practice will mold your ideas into dynamic truths capable of navigating linguistic volleys and pivots. You will become dynamic in your thinking. You will become like water, powerful enough to carve change into the landscape of ideas and flexible enough to move where the landscape needs you most.

Most people will not understand your vision because you are not like most people. Don't settle, and don't stop. This is critical. You have spent the time to build the plan, the prototype, and the new path forward. The critical hour is now. Do not let the fact that innovation can never be the standard path dissuade you from continuing. The standard path is the status quo, which is comfortable and a preference for the majority.

Thankfully, the majority does not decide what your preference is.

You are a free human, born to live your life, define your purpose, and pour your whole self into making it happen. The world is not your responsibility; your perspective is your reality and responsibility.

The sooner you release yourself from the shackles of your past, the sooner you become free to shine like a beacon to the people seeking your light. Let the old way be so you are free to jump with both feet into the life of your own making.

Love is the Medicine

Remember, on this journey, the truth is love. The people you encounter who don't understand present the opportunity to refine your message, but do not continue to repeat this process longer than necessary. When the message is clear enough that your audience, colleagues, team, or gallerist understands your value, don't look back. So much of the journey is about releasing dependence on old ways that no longer serve you. The medicine for the low points, when the alignment between you and the world seems forever at odds, is love. Love sees you for your fabulous self you are. True love believes in you and knows you pour your whole self into your vision; they don't treat you trivially and lightly. Love will lift you, wipe your weary eyes, and make you stronger than fear.

Real-World Examples of Connections & Partnerships

Blog-Based Co-founders: Basecamp

In the early 2000s, entrepreneur Jason Fried openly shared his business insights and challenges on his blog. A call for programming help posted there caught the attention of David Heinemeier Hansson, a programmer in Denmark who had been avidly following Jason's posts. David reached out with a thoughtful solution, sparking a meaningful email exchange. They built trust and rapport over six months of remote collaboration, eventually co-founding Basecamp in 2004. This partnership began entirely from an online content connection, demonstrating the power of transparent communication and collaboration through shared interests. Source: 37signals.com

Artist Collective: Netvvrk

Netvvrk is an artist membership platform founded in 2021 by Paddy Johnson, a New York-based art educator and entrepreneur. Johnson, known for her work as an art critic and blogger, established Netvvrk to support mid-career artists by providing a community for peer communication, access to a curriculum tailored for creative small business owners, online mentoring, workshops, connections with prominent arts professionals, and opportunities for critical art review. Netvvrk has helped artists secure over $1 million in grants in its first two years. Source: Wikipedia

Historic Mastermind for Civic Innovation: Franklin's Junto

Benjamin Franklin's Junto Club, established in 1727, exemplifies the power of intimate, regular, focused discussion groups. This diverse group met weekly to discuss self-improvement, ideas, and collaborative ventures, ultimately sparking significant civic innovations such as the first public library, volunteer fire departments, and a public hospital. Junto's success underscores the value of cultivating deep, committed peer groups that actively support each other's endeavors, exemplifying how regular, structured collaboration can yield substantial collective achievements. Historic Parisian Salon Groups: Gertrude Stein, Natalie Clifford Barney, Adrienne Monnier

In 1920s Paris, women like Gertrude Stein, Natalie Clifford Barney, and Adrienne Monnier hosted salon-style gatherings, fostering intellectual freedom, creativity, and collaboration. These groups encouraged open dialogue and the exchange of bold ideas among writers, artists, and thinkers, significantly influencing art, literature, and feminism. The salons provided nurturing environments where authentic relationships and groundbreaking collaborations naturally developed.

Under-the-Radar Events & Retreats: Not all networking happens in conference halls; some of the most profound connections form in unconventional venues. Look for retreats, festivals, or invite-only gatherings that bring together creatives and innovators in a more relaxed, immersive setting.

Content is Your Calling Card

When you lead by providing value – informative content, a space for discussion, etc. – you become associated with that topic. This leads collaborators to find you. For instance, a professor who starts a blog series interviewing other researchers could end up with a network of colleagues far beyond her institution. Or an entrepreneur who moderates an online forum for bootstrapped startups will naturally connect with hundreds of other founders. Content is networking at scale – each article, video, or community post you put out can keep working for you, attracting comments, shares, and introductions long after you created it. Think about what platform you can create that aligns with your passions. It might feel like extra work, but it's a high-leverage way to meet the kind of people you want to meet because you're effectively waving a flag that says, "Here's what I'm about – anyone else who cares about this, come over and talk!" And when you do connect, they'll already know something about you and feel aligned with your vision.

Lean In and Learn In the Community

One of the blessings of AI is also its curse, at least when it comes to commercially available chat-based platforms. The simplicity of a chat interface creates accessibility and a low barrier to entry, but the chat interface limits users to operating AI in a one-trick pony style. Ask it any number of questions, from "Which books should I read?", "how to handle difficult conversations with your mother," and "rephrase this email so I sound assertive"; the functionality feels pale compared to the unescapable hype.

The primary challenge is not the complexity of AI tools but rather the limited perception that AI serves primarily as a convenient digital shortcut.

To unlock the deeper potential of AI, professionals need to adopt an AI Mindset—a deliberate shift in thinking that moves beyond basic tool usage into strategic, integrated collaboration with artificial intelligence. This mindset includes:

  • Clarity of Intent: Identifying how AI enhances specific professional and creative goals.

  • Continuous Learning: Regularly exploring new AI tools, methodologies, and potential integrations.

  • Collaborative Exploration: Engaging with communities of practice to share discoveries, address common challenges, and cultivate collective expertise.

In my recent exploration, Developing an AI Mindset, I discussed how professionals can transform superficial AI interactions into rich, productive integrations by actively reshaping their approach to AI.

Conclusion

Remember, the power to rewrite your narrative and reshape your journey is always within you. The crossroads you've reached is an invitation to step fully into your vision, leaving behind what no longer serves you. Lean into clarity, connect intentionally with those who resonate deeply with your path, and surround yourself with allies who genuinely see you.
